Tim Tebow: Jets Reportedly Won’t Trade Star Backup QB Before Deadline
Filed Under: Articles

The New York Jets traded for Tim Tebow in the offseason, after the arrival of Peyton Manning in Denver. Despite being a non-factor for most of the season on offense, the Jets apparently have no plans to re-ship to another team before the NFL trade deadline at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

New York Daily News reporter Manish Mehta has learned that the Jets will not make Tebow available to other teams. His sources also say that head coach Rex Ryan wants to get the backup QB more snaps on offense going forward.

The move shouldn’t come as a surprise to Jets fans. Tebow cost the team draft picks this season, and there’s little doubt that management would be able to pull off a deadline deal that netted the same kind of return.

After being named the NFL’s most overrated player in a league-wide survey, it seems the pressure is building for Tebow to do something successful in New York.

He hasn’t had the opportunity to split snaps or even drives with Mark Sanchez, the man who was ranked No. 2 on the same survey. Instead, offensive coordinator Tony Sparano has used Tebow almost exclusively as a blocker and decoy in the progression of this offense.

When Tebow is given the chance to run the ball, his touches have been few and far between. Highlighted by a big gain against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the “Wild Jet” package so many thought would be a threat at the beginning of the season has yet to materialize.

As evidenced by this NFL.com tweet, it appears Tebow can still be a factor for this team, if they give him the opportunity to do so.

The coaching staff has been content leaning on Sanchez and Shonn Greene to carry this traditional offense, despite having Sparano, who was instrumental in the Miami Dolphins’ success running the Wildcat package several seasons ago.

If Tebow is going to get more offensive snaps, as Rex Ryan suggests per the report, maybe the NFL will be reminded why this guy was a media darling after leading the Denver Broncos to the postseason in 2011.

Up to this point, the most successful play of the season hasn’t even been on offense for Tebow. His 23-yard jump pass as a personal protector on the punt team is the highlight of the season for a guy who had over 2,300 total yards and 18 total touchdowns last year in Denver.

The Jets are very much alive in the AFC East race, but were dealt a major blow after losing to the New England Patriots last Sunday. At 3-4, they’ll have a chance to gain another conference tiebreaker point with a win over the Dolphins. The Jets defeated the Dolphins 23-20 in Week 3.

The offense is coming off consecutive weeks of putting up solid performances, including Sanchez throwing for 328 yards against the Patriots last week. That seems to have quieted calls for Tebow for now, but one bad performance could reignite chants for the third-year pro.

Whatever happens with Tebow the rest of this season, one thing is clear: He’ll be a Jet for the duration.
