Through the first seven weeks of the regular season, Tim Tebow has just 108 total yards on 22 rushes and three pass attempts. The New York Jets backup quarterback hasn’t attempted more than one pass or been allowed to run the ball more than five times in a single game all season.

The lesson to be learned here is that the Jets have rendered Tebow irrelevant as a football player in 2012 and turned him into a major distraction.

The polarizing signal-caller is therefore guaranteed to disappear once the cameras focus their attention to the Jets’ game vs. the Miami Dolphins this weekend at MetLife Stadium. New York has shown no interest in utilizing Tebow, and has been struggling to win games all season long, so why start now?

It’s quite frustrating, considering that Tebow threw for two touchdowns against Miami as the quarterback of the Denver Broncos a season ago, when he led the team to a comeback win in overtime on the road.

This season, the Dolphins defense is suspect against the pass again, but Tebow has completed just two of three pass attempts for 32 yards in 2012. He’ll be lucky to get a shot at completing a pass in Week 8, let alone a single completion.

On the other hand, Miami’s rush defense has been nothing short of dominant this year. The Dolphins rank fourth defending the run and are allowing fewer than 79 yards on the ground per week. Miami’s strength was put on display back in Week 3, when Tebow rushed just once for five yards in South Beach.

Based on the fact that the Jets won’t let Tebow pass and the Dolphins know he’s going to run when he checks in, we can safely predict that he will have no impact on this weekend’s outcome.

The third-year superstar is seeing just over three rush attempts per game, but is only averaging 3.5 yards per attempt. Clearly the Jets are holding back one of their best offensive weapons.

Just take a look at what Tebow has done as a runner in the past. In 2011, Tebow averaged 5.4 yards per carry and scored six touchdowns on the ground. In 2010, Tebow averaged 5.3 yards per carry and scored six rushing touchdowns in even fewer games.

New York is handcuffing their big offseason acquisition and it’s painful to watch.

Unfortunately for NFL fans and Tim Tebow supporters everywhere, it’s not going to get any better in Week 8 against the Miami Dolphins. After kickoff, the cameras will go from Tebow on the sidelines to the action down on the field, and the Jets’ beloved second-stringer will disappear for the eighth time in as many weeks.
