New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow is not the NFL’s most overrated player but instead the league’s most overanalyzed player.

In a recent Sports Illustrated poll of 180 NFL players, Tim Tebow was found to be the most overrated player, according to 34 percent of the voters.

But to label a backup quarterback overrated is unfair and nothing short of ridiculous. How can Tim Tebow be overrated if his coaches don’t even have enough faith to start him?

You first have to be rated in order to be overrated, and Tebow is not. He’s polarizing, yes, but hardly seen as a superstar on the field.

The talk surrounding Tim Tebow has never been about his unrivaled throwing ability, or his MVP-caliber play. Clearly neither exists. The chatter has instead been about Tebow’s celebrity and recently the way in which the Jets have been utilizing him.

No one is crowning Tim Tebow as the best passer of his generation. When it comes to Tebow’s play, often times he’s underrated and over criticized by those who think it matters how the ball leaves the quarterback’s hand.

I’ve got news: It doesn’t. Philip Rivers serves the ball up on a platter before he throws, yet he is celebrated as one of the league’s elite passers.

If playing backup quarterback in the NFL makes Tim Tebow overrated, then how many starting quarterbacks could join him in that category?

If anyone is deserving of the NFL’s “Most Overrated Player” tag, it’s Mark Sanchez. The Jets have been trying to convince us for years that Sanchez is a worthy starting quarterback. Therefore Sanchez is overrated. Tebow is simply overanalyzed.

The fact that NFL players think Tim Tebow is overrated because people care to know who he’s dating and what he’s doing on a given a day proves that the results of this poll are built purely on jealousy and envy. No one besides Skip Bayless is preaching Tim Tebow’s ability. No one is claiming that Tebow can make every throw Aaron Rodgers can or that he would lead the Jets to the Super Bowl if he were starting.

Tebow is being embarrassed by the Jets coaching staff, playing punt coverage and fullback on occasion. Granted, he’s talked about too much and covered too often by the media, given his current status as a backup quarterback.

But to call Tim Tebow the most overrated player in the NFL is unacceptable and fallacious.

There are too many other players who routinely fall short of high expectations for Tebow to be singled out by a group of 180 bitter NFL players.
